Thomas Was Alone

20 Oct

Thomas-Was-Alone

Let me tell you about “Thomas Was Alone”… This was probably the best game I’ve played this whole year, and in some regards, in the last few years!

Yep, I’ll let that sink in…

First of all, I’ll flatly state that although I like indie games, I’m not much for artsy-ones (they feel pretentious and empty, like “The Path” and “Passage”), or the usual minimalist opus (to disguise the fact that they’re lacking in graphical skills)…

But, although TWA is a bit artsy and minimalistic, it’s the exact opposite of pretentious and the minimalism doesn’t seem to be there to hid the lack of graphical skills, but as an aesthetic choice.

But what makes the game so great, you might ask? Well, the game itself is very nice… You control rectangles with different abilities, sometimes more than one in a single level (you can swap between them). Some of them can jump higher, but are too tall to pass through certain places, another acts as a trampoline and so forth.

So, you got a nifty, very well designed platformer… but there’s hundreds of well designed platformers out there, what makes this one so special?

The writing and the narration… Mike Bithell does an extraordinary work in fleshing out rectangles, creating an emotional bond between them and the player that’s surprisingly strong… Someone should force David Cage play this and learn that you don’t need high polycounts or fancy shaders to get that illusive connection in place!

In fact, I haven’t felt such a strong connection to characters in games since I played “I Can Hold My Breath Forever”… There must be something in the “child-like innocence” both of these games display, while having good gameplay mechanics and just showing enough of the story that you add the rest mentally or wait for the conclusion to find out about.

Final note to the artistic side of the game… at first it looks very minimalistic, but everything in the game is really very cared for… the skewed levels, the way text blends in the scenario, etc…

So, definitely grab this one, it’s a real work of art… 10/10

Chrome Hunter!

24 Sep

Well, Indie Speed Run has come and gone, and I’ve got a portmortem up at Spellcaster Studios’ website!

title_screen

The result was pretty nice… Next month I’ll release this version of the game for free, but we’re going to see if we can improve the game further and release it commercially… Let’s see how that goes!

Hamlet, or The Last Game Without MMORPG Features, shaders and Product Placement

13 Aug

Well, as usual, I’ve been busy… We’ve just moved the RealJob™ office to a new location, closer to home, so hopefully I’ll have a bit more time to spend on Grey, and on gaming in general (less 1h30 I lose each day travelling).

game_info_feature

Anyway, I’ve not been playing a lot of games (not enough time), but I had time to finish “Hamlet, or The Last Game Without MMORPG Features, shaders and Product Placement”. This is a short game, takes a couple of hours to finish, but it’s a great one…

It’s a “one-room-a-time” adventure game, in which you’re inserted into a weird version of Hamlet and have to sort out the mess you’ve made.

The game is an advertised: it’s not a MMORPG, has no shaders and product placement, and is a very humorous game (as you might guess by the title)…

Give it a whirl, it’s a lot of fun (although some puzzles are just unfair!)…

Gunpoint

18 Jun

Welcome to another edition of “hey, this game is cool and you should totally check it out!”…

Today, we feature Gunpoint:

GunpointCapsule_lg

Gunpoint is a pixel-art platforming stealth-based puzzle game, featuring a “crosslink” mechanic that enable the player to control the interaction between different scenario components, like opening a door on a flick of a switch, or fire a gun, or something else…

The game is very well made, and I sprung for the collector’s edition (which features a small documentary and all the prototypes of the game: it’s very interesting seeing the evolution of the game throughout the years of development).

The gameplay is solid and the dialogs are witty and light-hearted, following the adventures of a spy/private investigator.

The only bad thing about the game is that it is too short, and most of the puzzles are too simple… I was kind of hoping that the community surrounding the game would have made new, interesting stuff for it, but so far I haven’t found anything worthwhile. The levels are easy to edit, so I‘m still hoping…

Still, the music is great and very moody, and graphics are amazing (the animations are wonderful in all it’s pixelized glory), and it’s well worth the 10 bucks or so it costs…

So, get it now, from either Steam or directly from the developer.

Isometric goodness!

12 Mar

Hi everyone…

I’m still playing XCom lately, doing campaigns in Ironman mode (the only way to play after the first campaign), and the game is the gift that keeps on giving… It’s so full of awesome, it should be mandatory for all game designers to play it over and over again until they learn! I’ve always been a fan of this kind of strategy/isometric games, but my appetite for those has not been quenched in the last years…

But now, us fans of turn-based/isometric games are going to have a field-day in the next months…

First of all, take a look at indie game Underrail:

Currently on alpha, it’s already looking like it can be an exciting game

And on another note, here’s a mission walkthrough for “Shadowrun Returns”:

The amount of fun they seem to be having playing their game is awesome! Smile

Both of this games have an Achilles heel: the graphics… I don’t like the graphical look of neither, but I’ll overlook that for all the isometric goodness that will come from them. “Shadowrun Returns” will be awesome, with all the map editing and quest building options, besides a game that seems to have all the good stuff of XCom… Hope they’ll allow for coop multiplayer on that!

This is what I’d like for Grey to be, but in realtime… although I’m starting to question that choice! Winking smile

Driftmoon

28 Feb

Although I haven’t tried it now, if you’re into indie RPGs you might want to take a look at “Driftmoon”, a top-down indie RPG that’s been in development for almost 7 years…

It looks very good and extensive, with some very interesting details (I like the characters “speaking” throughout the action, not only during cutscenes).

So, take a look at the trailer and give it a whirl… I know I will when I get the time! Smile

On other fronts, I’ve been working on Grey lately, mostly on the tools and the definition of the UI… It’s slow work, but going steady.. You can read about it on the Spellcaster Studios blog.
